Many marijuana growers are left with a lot of “waste” at the end of a harvest. The good news is that a lot of the material that is considered “waste” can actually be used. Throwing leaves and stems away could mean throwing away extra profit, extra smoke and extra cannabinoids.
While many of us are conditioned to believe that all the goodness is in the buds, the stems and leaves are surprisingly concentrated in cannabinoids. The leaves and stems are not necessarily good for smoking but they have a multitude of other uses. Don’t waste perfectly good plant material! Use your leaves or stems in one of the following ways.
Although the leaves and stems contain lesser amounts of THC than the buds, you will have so much of it that you can make edibles with them! In fact, there still are a multitude of cannabinoids in the stems and leaves, and making edibles means nothing gets wasted. You can make edibles with leave and stems the exact same way that you make edibles with buds. All you have to do is cook them down in butter or oil, and within 12 hours you’ll have some perfectly intoxicating cannabutter.
With that you can make marijuana edibles. Whether you choose to sell them or eat them, there are some additional advantages from your harvest.
Infuse your alcohol
Alcohol is an incredibly great solvent when it comes to THC, and so a great way to get the most out of your marijuana is to infuse it in alcohol. The flavour as well as the cannabinoids are retained, giving you the most potential for marijuana cocktails!
Put your leaves and stems inside a bottle of vodka and let it sit for as long as you like. All of the THC (and other cannabinoids) in the stems and leaves will dissolve in the alcohol, changing the flavour and the type of intoxication! Now that you have marijuana infused vodka (or rum or gin or Bacardi…) you can make marijuana infused cocktails!
Sprinkle them on your salad
Raw marijuana is surprisingly good for you, and even though it doesn’t get you high it offers the body a multitude of medicinal benefits. If you’ve just finished trimming some marijuana buds, sprinkle the fresh leaves on top of your salad or pizza. They taste great and they are a great source of nutritional cannabinoids. In fact, when you use marijuana in this way it basically becomes a superfood. The body is much better able to absorb cannabinoids through raw marijuana than it is through dried buds. So if you’re really health conscious and want a real health kick form your plants, eat your leaves raw!
Hash oil made out of stems
Making hash oil out of stems is a handy trick that not many people know about. Obviously, stem hash oil isn’t nearly as good as the hash oil you’re used to smoking. Nonetheless, it is clean and perfectly good to smoke, so why waste it?
To make stem hash oil, grind your marijuana stems into a really fine powder. If you have to, use a blender. Your stems need to be dry for this to be really effective. Put the powder in a jar, and cover the line of powder with 99% isopropyl alcohol. Shake it – and violently – for a couple of minutes. Strain it immediately after shaking into a flat dish. Let it sit for long enough and all of the alcohol will evaporate. What you will be left with is some delicious hash oil made out of your marijuana stems!
Make green tea
This might not be the green tea you are thinking of. This is a different kind of herbal green tea. THC and other cannabinoids are not actually soluble in water, so this green tea has to be made in something fatty, such as milk. In fact, in India, a drink is made from grinding the cannabis plant to a pulp and then mixing it into a lassi!
For a more western style, throw your trim into a pot of milk and put it on the stove. Add honey and whatever other herbs you like to put in warm milk. This is a great drink before bed because both milk and marijuana are great for putting you into a calm sleep! Enjoy your warm, marijuana infused smoothie!
