Since 1988, the cannabis cup has hosted some of the most epic strains known to mankind. Originally held in Amsterdam, the cannabis cup now shows its presence all over the world and even has divisions catered to specific niches within the cannabis community. Whether we’re talking about medical cannabis, extracts or just some plain old sticky icky, this is definitely the event that stoners flock too in masses.
Since the legalization of cannabis in the United States, we have seen an influx of new entries and the event itself has propelled new strains into the industry that has revolutionized the way we think about weed.
A Brief History of the Cannabis Cup
As mentioned, this epic event started in 1988 and was hosted in Amsterdam. Seeing that Amsterdam for the longest period had some of the most permissive cannabis laws on books, it acted as a Launchpad for new growers to showcase their skills.
Obviously, Dutch Growers dominated the ranks of the cannabis cups for many years, until the late 90s when California jumped on the Medical Marijuana wagon. Since then, the cup has moved from city to city and nowadays we have more than one event per year.
Cannabis Cup 2016 hosted in Colorado was one of the most epic cups to date, with hundreds of new strains, extracts and edibles all coming from a budding industry. Las Vegas also showed us some epic strains this March 2017.
As mentioned, where the cannabis cup used to be held once a year, nowadays we typically see between 4-6 events per year. Depending on the region, the laws and whoever wants to hold a cannabis cup, these events are becoming more popular every year. Not to mention that every cup also meshes the cultural aspect and brings well-known artists to the mix.
For instance, Breal from Cypress Hill has long attended Cannabis cups, not to mention the infamous Tommy Chong and Cheech Marin as well. You can see Hollywood stars show up to these events too.
This year, there will be a total of 6 cannabis cups with the main event happening in Colorado once more.
The Cups itself
Winning a cannabis cup is almost like winning a Grammy or an Oscar. It is a physical token of how awesome you are at what you do. This year, Alex Grey and his wife Allyson Grey will be working on the design for the cup and it is definitely something that will turn heads.
The Greys have long been icons in the world of psychedelics and art, and by adding in their unique perspective on the cup will make this year’s design one of the best there ever was.
This is what the Greys had to say about it, directly from Cannabiscup.com
To honor the science and spirit of ganja, Alex Grey’s sculptural grail created exclusively for HIGH TIMES, embeds chemical, botanical, historical and archetypal symbolism praising cannabis. At the base of the cup are diagrams of medicinal cannabinoid molecules. An inscription on the base reads: “Hail, Cannabis, ancient sacramental healing ally of Humanity.”
Molecular forms emerge on the base and begin to rise up the shaft in a helical DNA strand evoking centuries of genetic cultivation. The helix transforms into an occult symbol of the caduceus, a snake entwined staff of the Greek messenger God Hermes.
Twin double-headed serpents have wings sprouting from all of their crowns that cradle a flaming eye of higher vision. The Serpents of Wisdom represent psychic forces of sensuality, peace and philosophical openness offered through cannabis. Symbols of flaming eyes and wings point to flights of Divine Imagination that arise during stoned reverie.
The Chinese & Sanskrit script refers to hemp and Bhang, acknowledging the Eastern Civilizations that first planted cannabis at the dawn of agriculture over ten thousand years ago. The Western Civilizations of Greece and America are honored for their worldwide proliferation of the earth’s most beloved and most misunderstood sacred plant. By dating the cultural spread of ganja, we gain knowledge of the cannabis tribe’s sacramental history.
How to Enter into the Cannabis Cup
To participate in the cannabis cup you need to purchase a stall, however this might not entirely be necessary. You simply have to mail the people in charge of the cannabis cup by mailing to email@example.com with the specifications you want to achieve.
For most people, purchasing a stall is important because you can garner new fans, new customers and make your brand known to the world.
So if you’re interested in showcasing your strain to the world, simply email hightimes and enter your strain under the right category. Obviously, if you’re not living in “legal countries” or states, entering into the competition will be infinitely more difficult seeing that cannabis would be “illegal” making it harder to transport. However, plenty of growers have done this in the past to compete for the prize of being a cannabis cup grower.
